Paying the Price

Physicians can be held liable for prescribing drugs inappropriately. In 2002, a court found Florida doctor James Graves guilty of manslaughter after four of his patients overdosed on OxyContin. According to the New York Times, Graves was the first doctor to be charged with manslaughter in such a case. He was sentenced to almost sixty-three years in jail. Graves maintains that his patients lied to him, saying they were in pain and that he did nothing wrong.

Unfortunately, people who are genuinely in pain have also paid the price for the high levels of prescription medication abuse. As doctors' prescription habits have been scrutinized more closely, more and more have become unwilling to prescribe opioid drugs even to the patients who really need them for fear of getting into trouble. This reluctance to prescribe the drugs can have a devastating effect on those who really are in excruciating, debilitating pain. In addition, these pain patients are looked on with suspicion if they seek relief by changing doctors.
